The Word

2014

For two weeks in October 2014, we took part in the artistic residency held at Ateliê Aberto, Campinas – SP. Drawing inspiration from the poem generated by Traslador,

The word, man, the world.
In short, the world of men.
In short, the people of the world.

we structured the work around three pillars:

[1]
THE WORD, MAN, THE WORLD
TRASLADOR

[2]
PROJECTION OF A BLACK HOLE UNIVERSE

[3]
LAUNCH INTO SPACE I
LAUNCH INTO SPACE II

The Word

A thermal printer connected to the internet receives the information generated by the website traslador.org. As the translations are produced on the site, the mutation of the phrases is printed in their original language along with an indication of the country from which each phrase was sent and the path of its translation journey.

Projection of a black hole universe

A point of tension is created in the gallery through a hole cut at the center of the wooden floor. It is revealed that the floor is suspended, and from a plumb line a set of explorations begins. A motion sensor triggers the motor, and over the course of the forty days of the exhibition, the plumb bob descends one meter below ground before returning to its highest point.

Launch into space I

On October 12, 2014, the first Launch into Space took place at the Municipal Observatory of Campinas Jean Nicolini:

Two strands of hair, one from Aruan and one from Flavia, were each placed in a glass container, then stored in a metal box and buried in the ground at the approximate geographic coordinates 22°54'00.36"S / 46°49'34.75"W.

As historical evidence, following the launch, the witnesses stood in a queue for approximately two hours and were then able to observe, for approximately 30 seconds, two bright points through a telescope, corresponding to two stars in the Cygnus constellation.

On that occasion, Fernando Búia, alongside Aruan and Flavia, carried out the opening and closing of the ground gap.

Launch into space II

On October 13, 2014, the second Launch into Space took place on the façade of Ateliê Aberto in Campinas:

Two strands of hair, one from Aruan and the other from Flavia, were placed in separate glass containers, then stored in a metal box, and subsequently inserted into an hole opened in the façade located at Rua Major Sólon, 911, Cambuí, Campinas, at a distance of 1.04 meters to the left of the entrance door and 1.72 meters above the ground.

On that occasion, Léo Scopin, alongside Aruan and Flavia, carried out the opening and closing of the wall hole.

Ateliê Aberto formally committed, through a signed document, to preserve the box and its contents for as long as it remains responsible for the building in which this Launch took place.
